Description:

Of mahogany with original stained faux bronze decoration. The shaped marble top inlaid with the coat of arms of John Howard Galton Esq of Hadzor Hall, the arms edged with border of Hauteville marble with molded rim, the hexagonal stem with three inset panels set to the base with volutes, the stem resting on triform plinth base, the whole raised on three scrolls, each scroll raised on a bun foot.

John Howard Galton was the youngest son of Samuel Galton Jr. and Lucy Barclay of Dudson House.  The Galtons, whose ancestors first appear in 16th-century Dorset, lived in Birmingham and operated a gun-manufacturing business, Farmer & Galton, despite being a Quaker family. In 1819 John Howard married Isabella Strutt of Derby, daughter of Joseph Strutt, Mayor of Derby and Isabel Douglas.  The present table was executed in honor of their marriage, with both families’ crests and coats of arms displayed on the tabletop using inlaid marble decoration.
